20/10/2009: The Westfield Matildas advanced to the final of the ASEAN Football Federation Women's Championships with a thrilling 5-1 win over Myanmar (Burma) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on Saturday. 12/07/2008: The Australian Women's team, the Matildas, reeling from a 0-5 demolition by China in a friendly international in Tianjin during the week, drew on more experienced players (including sadly retiring Di Alagich) to defeat a very combative New Zealand 1-0 at North Sydney Oval today.

06/07/2008: Australia's Olympic Squad for the Beijing Olympic Game in August has been finalised. The largely under 23 squad, with three overage players (Jade North, David Carney and Archie Thompson) contains some bold ommissions, including Nathan Burns. The squad meets New Zealand's squad this Saturday at North Sydney Oval before their first round Olympic matches against Serbia on 7/8/08 and Argentina on 10/8/08 in Shanghai, then 3 days later against Côte d'Ivoire in Tianjin.

27/06/2008: Australia's Socceroos are off to Taskent, on the Silk Road of Asia, and capital of Uzbekistan, as part of their route through Group A toward South Africa 2010. Our 2006 World Cup and 2007 Asian rival Japan is also in Group A of the Asian 4th qualifying stage. We are joined by Bahrain, Uzbekistan and Qatar. Australia has a bye in the first round (September 6) and will play Uzbekistan, who loom as the darkhorse in the group, away in Tashkent in its first match on Wed September 10, 2008. The 10th and final game will be at home on Wed June 17, 2009 against Japan.

20/06/2008: The Australian Women's team, the Matildas, put in a strong performance at the 2008 Peace Cup in South Korea this month. After a close game versin the USA (1-2), in the second game Italy was disposed of 3-0. Teenage sensation Kyah Simon scored a memorable injury-time goal, to earn the Matildas a sensational 1-0 win over World Cup finalist Brazil. Matildas Coach Tom Sermanni has named an 18-player squad for the Matildas upcoming two match tour of China in July.

Australia's Women's national team, the Matildas, had lost to favourites North Korea 0-3 in the semi final. A 3-0 win over Croatia, after Ireland defeated hosts Malaysia 3-1 on the opening day at the Petaling Jaya Stadium, Kuala Lumpur, led to Australia gained a semi-final berth with a hard fought win over Chile 2-1. 03/03/2008: Playing in front of a partisan sell-out crowd of 47,440 spectators at the McAfee Coliseum in San Fransico, USA, Mexico went ahead through an 18th minute own-goal by Adam D'Apuzzo but the make-shift Aussies came back through a goal by Troy Hearfield two minutes from the fianl whistle, to draw 1-1. The Olyroos are warming up for the Olympics in Beijing. The draw for the Beijing Olympics football tournaments will be held on April 20.

02/02/2008: The Australian women's U17 football squad came in a distant 3rd in this week's 'Future Stars' tournament in Auckland, NZ, through a hard-fought 1-0 win over host nation New Zealand. The USA won the tournament with a 3-2 victory over Germany. Australia had earlier suffered a 6-0 defeat against the USA in the opening match and a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Germany.

23/01/2008: Australian men's national coach Pim Verbeek has picked a 39 man squad consisting of 20 Hyundai A-League players and 19 overseas players. Eight Under 23 (Qantas Olyroo) players were named. 18/11/2007: The Qantas Socceroos win over Nigeria at Crave Cottage ground in London was important leading up the the Asian World Cup qualifiers starting in February. A magnificent goal from David Carney in the 52nd minute earned Australia a 1-0 result. With that game out of the way, the FFA must resolve the coaching situation immediately.

5/8/2007: The Qantas Socceroos will go into the 2010 World Cup qualifiers that begin next year as the top seeded team in Asia, following its exploits at the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany. As the best performed team at the 2006 finals from Asia, Australia is seeded one, with Korea Republic, Saudi Arabia, Japan and Iran rounding out the top five. The remaining seeds are based on the qualification process from the World Cup qualifiers, with 43 teams entered for the 2010 qualification campaign. Asia gets 4.5 berths to the 2010 World Cup, with the top four going through automatically, while a fifth team will play in a Intercontinental Play-off against ... Oceania. Australia’s qualifying campaign will commence in February 2008.

10/06/2007: The Matildas have suffered a 2-0 defeat to DPR Korea in Coffs Harbour. The Matildas hopes of qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games have been effectively dashed following a 2-0 defeat. Two second half strikes from the visitors ensured a repeat of the scoreline in Pyongyang last week and leaves the Matildas six points behind DPR Korea with two matches remaining. North Korea need only to earn a point in their remaining matches to be the sole qualifier from Group B. Australia play Hong Kong away on 4 August and Taiwan in Coffs on 12 August 2007.

06/06/2007: The Qantas Under 23s have progressed to the third and final stage of qualifying for the Beijing Olympics with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Jordan in Amman overnight. After a tight first half the Australian side completed dominated the second period with goals from David Williams (2), Nick Ward and Dario Vidosic. Only the winner of the next qualifier group, held from August 22 to November 21, will progress to the Olympic Games in Beijing next year.

03/06/2007: The Matildas have suffered a 2-0 defeat to DPR Korea tonight, in what is a blow to their chances of qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Level on points going into the match, DPR now hold a distinct advantage going into the return leg of their group match meetings next Saturday in Coffs Harbour. Only the winner of the group will progress to the Olympic Games in Beijing next year.

Football: Women's Olympic Qualifiers 07/04/2007: The Australian women's Olympic football team, the Matildas, defeated Hong Kong 15-0 today. The Matildas have commenced the second and final stage of qualifying for the Beijing Olympics with a comprehensive win at the BCU International Stadium in Coffs Harbour. The Matildas raced to a six goal half time lead before adding a further nine goals in the second half. Striker Kate Gill scored five goals for the second consecutive international match. Australia will travel to Taiwan on Wednesday for the second Group B match next Sunday in Taipei. [ FFA .... ] International

Football: Socceroo Friendly 24/03/2007: The Australian senior men's football team, the Socceroos, with a superior first half display won 2-0 over China in Guangzhou. Goalscorers Brett Holman (8') and Mark Bresciano (28') were two of several Australian players who put on a dominant first half performance giving the home side no chance. Despite China having the best of play after half time, the Australian defence did not allow for many serious shots on goal by the Chinese. A multitude of second half substitutions gave several more players some first team match experience but eventually took its toll of the match as a spectacle.
