Promising Matildas win ASEAN Final

20/10/2009: The Westfield Matildas advanced to the final of the ASEAN Football Federation Women's Championships with a thrilling 5-1 win over Myanmar (Burma) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on Saturday. The Australians met Vietnam in the Final and won 1-0 through an own goal. Players return to Australia next week for the start of the W-League.

The Westfield Matildas had a 6-0 win over Singapore in their 3rd group game of the AFF Women's Championship 2008; The mens Young Socceroos won the AFF U-19 Championship after beating Korea Republic 3-1 on penalties in the final in Thailand; and the Joeys got to the Quarter Finals before losing to the UAE. 24/09/2007: Adelaide moved to the Semi-Finals of the Asian Champions League with a gripping 1-0 win tonight over J-League side Kashima Antlers, in front of a vocal 16,965 crowd at a packed Hindmarsh Stadium which included hundreds of Kashima fans. Robert Cornthwaite redeemed himself after his own-goal in Japan - with a headed goal in the 73 min but the Reds could have been well up by them with better shooting. [FFA stats .. ]

With the 44th min send-off of Dutch keeper Maarten Stekelenberg, goals from Harry Kewell (the resulting penalty) and a Josh Kennedy header, cancelled out Klaas Jan Huntelaar's superb opening goal made after just six min.

In the second last warm up game before taking on Uzbekistan in the World Cup qualifier. Australia were on top in the first half, but this was overturned by a more cohesive South Africa in the second. 14/07/2008: The Qantas Joeys U16 squad have started the ASEAN region Football Federation Youth Championship with a 2-1 win over Bahrain in Jakarta, Indonesia. Victorian midfielder Kamal Ibrahim scored Australia's opening goal with NSW midfielder Jared Lum adding a second from the penalty spot. Australia romped to the top of the standings beating hosts Indonesia 6-0 here at the Stadion Lebak Bulus. They then defeated Malaysia 4-1 and drew 1-1 with Singapore. The Joeys met Bahrain again in the final on Saturday 19 July and drew 1-1 AET, winning it after a nail biting 5-4 sudden death penalty shootout. The tournament is vital preparation for the AFC Under 16 Championship, to be held in Uzbekistan in October.

06/07/2008: Australia's Olympic Squad for the Beijing Olympic Game in August has been finalised. The largely under 23 squad, with three overage players (Jade North, David Carney and Archie Thompson) contains some bold ommissions, including Nathan Burns. The squad meets New Zealand's squad this Saturday at North Sydney Oval before their first round Olympic matches against Serbia on 7/8/08 and Argentina on 10/8/08 in Shanghai, then 3 days later against Côte d'Ivoire in Tianjin.

Off to Tashkent

27/06/2008: Australia's Socceroos are off to Taskent, on the Silk Road of Asia, and capital of Uzbekistan, as part of their route through Group A toward South Africa 2010. Our 2006 World Cup and 2007 Asian rival Japan is also in Group A of the Asian 4th qualifying stage. We are joined by Bahrain, Uzbekistan and Qatar. Australia has a bye in the first round (September 6) and will play Uzbekistan, who loom as the darkhorse in the group, away in Tashkent in its first match on Wed September 10, 2008. The 10th and final game will be at home on Wed June 17, 2009 against Japan.

20/06/2008: The Australian Women's team, the Matildas, put in a strong performance at the 2008 Peace Cup in South Korea this month. After a close game versin the USA (1-2), in the second game Italy was disposed of 3-0. Teenage sensation Kyah Simon scored a memorable injury-time goal, to earn the Matildas a sensational 1-0 win over World Cup finalist Brazil. Matildas Coach Tom Sermanni has named an 18-player squad for the Matildas upcoming two match tour of China in July.

The Adelaide United FC 'Reds' managed another hard fought game tonight, this time ending in a 0-0 draw with Changchun Yattai in China - a draw enough to go through to the quarter finals in September. Melbourne Victory FC dominated the first half but was embarassed by a rare Kevin Muscat error to go one behind, then redeemed themselves for the last game with a 3-1 win to take second spot. In other news Australian has been confirmed in the 2009 & 2010 ACL, with 2 teams (first off Mariners and Jets).

21/05/2008: Australia's Olyroos participation in the Intercontinental U-23 Football Championship in Malaysia continued with a 4-0 win over Togo. A 3-0 win over Croatia, after Ireland defeated hosts Malaysia 3-1 on the opening day at the Petaling Jaya Stadium, Kuala Lumpur, led to Australia gained a semi-final berth with a hard fought win over Chile 2-1. 25/04/2008: The Australian Men's Under 23 team will meet Serbia in Shanghai on 7 August, one day before the official opening of the Beijing Olympic Games. Our other opponents in the Group A first stage are 2004 Gold Medal winners Argentina (10 August, Shanghai) and Olympic Games debutants, the Ivory Coast (13 August, Tianjin). In women's football The Under 20 national women's team, the Young Matildas, completed their training camp in Canberra with a 4-2 win over the New Zealand under 17, and the Matildas, departed on Thursday for two international matches against the USA on April 27 in Cary, North Carolina, and May 3 in Birmingham, Alabamas part of the team's preparations for the AFC Asian Women's Cup in May. They have been drawn in Group B for the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2008 alongside Japan, Korea Republic and Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) ...

Adelaide United overcame missed first half chances and a solid display by their Vietnamese opponents to win 4-1 in Adelaide tonight, seeting themselves up well for the final two games. Adelaide moved two points ahead of Changchun Yatai, who drew 2-2 at Pohang Steelers. Melbourne Victory succumbed to Gamba Osaka away in Japan to dampen even more their chances of progressing.

07/02/2008: Preparations for the Qantas Socceroos next 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying match will step-up with a five day camp in Singapore ahead of the next vital game in the campaign against China. National coach, Pim Verbeek, will also give Hyundai A-League players another opportunity to press their claims for inclusion in the squad when Australia meets Singapore in an international friendly match on Saturday 22 March, four days before the qualifier.

The Qantas Joeys will next week commence preparations in earnest for October's FIFA U-17 World Cup qualifiers by participating in the eight-nation Lion City Cup Championship in Singapore. The tournament has become one of the region's most prestigious international youth competitions since its inception in 1977. Australia have been drawn into Group A alongside the United Arab Emirates, Chinese Taipei and Singapore B, while the other group will feature Singapore A, Vietnam, Uzbekistan and Thailand, with the two group winners to meet in the final. The top four teams in the 2008 AFC U-16 Championship will qualify for the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup to be held in Nigeria.

05/03/2008: The Matildas won a three game trans-Tasman series played at Stockland Stadium on the Sunshine Coast this week, winning all three games. The results were Australia 2 v New Zealand 0 on Saturday 1 March, Australia 2 v New Zealand 1 on Monday 3 March, and Australia 4 v New Zealand 2 on Wednesday 5 March, 2008.

03/03/2008: Playing in front of a partisan sell-out crowd of 47,440 spectators at the McAfee Coliseum in San Fransico, USA, Mexico went ahead through an 18th minute own-goal by Adam D'Apuzzo but the make-shift Aussies came back through a goal by Troy Hearfield two minutes from the fianl whistle, to draw 1-1. The Olyroos are warming up for the Olympics in Beijing. The draw for the Beijing Olympics football tournaments will be held on April 20.

'Future Stars' Tournament in NZ

02/02/2008: The Australian women's U17 football squad came in a distant 3rd in this week's 'Future Stars' tournament in Auckland, NZ, through a hard-fought 1-0 win over host nation New Zealand. The USA won the tournament with a 3-2 victory over Germany. Australia had earlier suffered a 6-0 defeat against the USA in the opening match and a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Germany.
In other girl's news New Zealand's Secondary Schoolgirls came within seventeen minutes of clinching the Deane Low Trophy for the first time ever on January 16, but wilted in the 35C heat at MacQuarie University as they were downed 2-1 by their Australian counterparts, who maintained their grip on the symbol of trans-tasman schoolgirl soccer supremacy ...

Socceroo Squad advised to AFC

23/01/2008: Australian men's national coach Pim Verbeek has picked a 39 man squad consisting of 20 Hyundai A-League players and 19 overseas players. Eight Under 23 (Qantas Olyroo) players were named. "“I have deliberately kept the squad big to give us maximum flexibility until match day,” Verbeek explained. He will trim it 18 for the actual game versus Qatar in 2 weeks.

This will be Verbeek's first opportunity to work with locally-based players ahead of the Qantas Socceroos 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign that kicks off against Qatar on Wednesday 6 February 2008 at the Telstra Dome in Melbourne.

Socceroos Given top Asian Seeding for WC

5/8/2007: The Qantas Socceroos will go into the 2010 World Cup qualifiers that begin next year as the top seeded team in Asia, following its exploits at the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany. As the best performed team at the 2006 finals from Asia, Australia is seeded one, with Korea Republic, Saudi Arabia, Japan and Iran rounding out the top five. The remaining seeds are based on the qualification process from the World Cup qualifiers, with 43 teams entered for the 2010 qualification campaign. Asia gets 4.5 berths to the 2010 World Cup, with the top four going through automatically, while a fifth team will play in a Intercontinental Play-off against ... Oceania. Australia’s qualifying campaign will commence in February 2008.

The Matildas hopes of qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games have been effectively dashed following a 2-0 defeat. Two second half strikes from the visitors ensured a repeat of the scoreline in Pyongyang last week and leaves the Matildas six points behind DPR Korea with two matches remaining. The Matildas have commenced the second and final stage of qualifying for the Beijing Olympics with a comprehensive win at the BCU International Stadium in Coffs Harbour. The Matildas raced to a six goal half time lead before adding a further nine goals in the second half. Striker Kate Gill scored five goals for the second consecutive international match. 24/03/2007: The Australian senior men's football team, the Socceroos, with a superior first half display won 2-0 over China in Guangzhou. Goalscorers Brett Holman (8') and Mark Bresciano (28') were two of several Australian players who put on a dominant first half performance giving the home side no chance. Despite China having the best of play after half time, the Australian defence did not allow for many serious shots on goal by the Chinese. A multitude of second half substitutions gave several more players some first team match experience but eventually took its toll of the match as a spectacle. [ FFA .... ]
