In the second last warm up game before taking on Uzbekistan in the World Cup qualifier. Australia were on top in the first half, but this was overturned by a more cohesive South Africa in the second. Pim Verbeek gave a debut to Richard Garcia (pictured).

In front of 16,097 fans Newcastle came from behind at the death with a penalty taken by Joel Griffiths after the Mariners had taken an 87th minute lead through substitute Matt Simon just off the plane from China.

Women's Football:
W-League Announced

The FFA and Westfield Group today announced a landmark agreement in support of the fastest growing team sport for women in the country – women’s football. The Westfield's support will range from the 'Westfield Championship for Girls', the establishment of a new national women’s league known as the 'Westfield W-League', and the national women's team to be known as the 'Westfield Matildas'. The Westfield W-League will comprise teams from each of the seven Australian Hyundai A-League clubs, plus one from Canberra. It will start at the end of October this year. Broadcast rights are still under discussion.
