Gully downed by nine-man Pines

Championship-chasing Green Gully suffered an amazing 1-0 loss to relegation-threatened Frankston Pines at Monterey Reserve on Friday evening. That would have been a story in itself, but Pines had just nine men against Gully's full complement of eleven by game's end: two Pines players had been dismissed, each for their second yellow. Adam Fadljevic got the game's only goal on the hour after he'd taken a quick free-kick which caught out an unprepared Gully defence. Shortly after, Craig Metcalfe and Jason Dimozantos both saw their second yellows, leaving Frankston to hold out for twenty-five minutes before recording only its second win of the season.

Melbourne Knights retains its position at the top of the table despite its 3-3 draw at Epping against Whittlesea Zebras on Sunday evening. The Knights will surely rue the draw after it led 3-0 at the interval, and faced just ten Zebras for the game's last minutes. Joe Spiteri with a single and Andrew Barisic with a double gave Knights a commanding lead, before second-half goals from Ross Antoniadis, John Angelovski, and Jerry Karpeh earnt Whittlesea the point.

Richmond closed the gap after its comfortable 3-1 home win over Fawkner Blues on Friday evening. It didn't start overly-promisingly for Richmond, going behind just before the interval to Joseph Youssef. But Richard Cardozo equalised deep into first-half added time, then Richmond took the lead with twenty still to play through Pablo Cardozo. Antun Kovacevic netted a last minute sealer to make the points safe for the Eagles.

Altona Magic maintains its push with a 1-0 win against Western Suburbs on Saturday evening at Paisley Park. Pece Cergovski got the game's only goal midway through the second half.

Heidelberg United too keep up the challenge, defeating Preston Lions 1-0 at Olympic Village on Sunday afternoon. Graham Hockless got the goal, putting in the latest of a series of notable performances.

South Melbourne defeated a misfiring Oakleigh Cannons 3-1 at Bob Jane on Sunday evening. South was two-up by the break - the first in the first minute when Goran Zoric took advantage of a fumble by Cannons' keeper Adrian Cagalj, and the second when Fernando De Moraes lobbed Cagalj shortly after. South then went a man down on the half-hour when Steven O'Dor was dismissed for his second yellow. Cannons coach Stuart Munro took off Cagalj for Scott Agustin at the break and Oakleigh looked to take advantage of its extra man. Stelios Drakos provided the breakthrough with fifteen minutes to go, but Hamlet Armenian came off the bench and restored South's two-goal lead four minutes later with a header.

But it was a mid-table contest which produced the greatest goalfeast of the round. Coburg United managed a high-energy 4-3 win over the AIS at Somers Street on Saturday evening. The students took a two-goal lead before the first-half's midpoint, but Coburg got one back before the break. Dane Milovanovic had opened things up five minutes in with a header, and Sam Munro extended the lead after eighteen. Tansel Baser kept Coburg in the contest just before the half-hour. An unfortunate AIS own-goal three minutes after the re-start put things back square again, then Baser grabbed the lead for Coburg with his second midway through the second-half. Nick Lazarevski put Coburg two ahead with fifteen still to play, but the AIS tightened the match up again when Matthew Theodore netted with ten minutes remaining.
