Hyundai A-League - The New National Football Competition
for 2005/06

A-League Launch
A-League Season 2005-2006 Draw

Timetable:

ASA Board met on Wednesday 29th September. Announcement of the 8 teams was expected soon after. Mooted for Thursday 14 October 2004, but extended to 21 October 2004, and then after further delays to 1 November 2004 - it happened.

The League is now expected to start 5 August 2005 and run for a very short 21 round season (play each other 3 times?) and end, with a 4 week final series, in summer, in late February! This short season appears to be dictated by TV rights, rather than football reasons.

There may be a short tournament in May-June 2005 to determine the Australian club to compete in June for the Oceania place at the World Club Championship. One rumour says that the NZ team is of course not allowed to play, and Perth Glory go straight to a Grand Final in Perth. The other 6 divided into 2 groups, winner of each to play off to meet Perth in GF. Other unconfirmed reports suggest that Oceania will not wait until June, and want the Australian club determined by 31st March, 2004 prior to the start of other Oceania qualifiers.

After the WCC tournament it is rumoured that there may be a pre season cup played as a knockout over 2 legs 1st round, then Semi finals and Finals. Not known if State League teams will be included. Also a joint competition with Asia may be sought for post season, with possibly the top 4 from Australia with the other 4 from top clubs in Asia. This may be played in Perth at Asian request.

Maximum squads of 20 players - and three of those players have to be under-18s, with a salary cap (report variously as $1.2M and $1.5m plus a guest 'marquee' player).
