SEASON V

Phillips In High Spirits
With New Deal

10/10/02

Spirit's new signing Marcus Phillips

Former Marconi and Sydney United midfielder Marcus Phillips has joined Northern Spirit on a short-term contract. Coach Lawrie McKinna signed the English born player after a week-long trial. He is expected to be available to face former club Sydney United next week. Phillips said he was very happy to be back in Australia and was looking forward to the challenge of returning to the National Soccer League.

"I really love playing football and living in Australia. I was with Canberra when they went under and it left it too late for me to find another club".

"I admired Spirit when they first came into the League and I've been really impressed by the work ethic of the boys since I've been here. Lawrie wants us playing an open, aggressive brand of football and if we play to our potential I think we can entertain and do well."

Phillips' career began in Swindon Town in the English Premier League where he played under Ossie Ardiles, Glenn Hoddle and John Gorman.

After a serious leg injury, Phillips resumed his career in Australia with Marconi in 1998/99.

He also played in the Singapore League.

The 28 year-old spent the last season playing for Brunei in the Malaysian League, under former Everton legend Mick Lyons.

On signing Phillips as one of his imports at Brunei, Lyons said Phillips has great commitment to complement his undoubted ability.

"There are types of midfielders who will give you everything they have. They will hustle about from one end of the pitch to the other and they will win the ball back".

"But the one quality they may miss is their ability on the ball. This lad (Phillips) can play. He will make that crucial pass, the telling pass that sets everything up for the strikers."

Phillips will join Spirit under a sporting visa.

Director of Football, Bill Collins, said his signing was a boost for the club and his commitment in training had convinced Spirit to secure his services.

"Marcus did very well in his previous stint in Australia. He will add plenty to our midfield stength and I know how determined he is to be a part of a winning Spirit team."
